Heal an Ear Infection

Can ear infections be healed naturally?

As a child I suffered frequently from ear infections.  Being a child of the 80’s, I was always prescribed an antibiotic, every. single. time.  I would use the antibiotic for 10 days, and a month later I would have another ear infection.  Because of this chronic condition, I “had” to have several rounds of tubes and when that didn’t work they “had” to remove my tonsils and adenoids because that had to be why I was getting chronic ear infections. Guess what?!? I am 35 years old and I still get ear infections, usually when I have consumed to much sugar and dairy.  Fortunately, I know why and I can help myself…naturally.     

Do you really need antibiotics?

Did you know that the majority of ear infections will clear up on their own without medication?  Antibiotics come with their own set of risks including lowered immune function and side effects like diarrhea, indigestion, yeast infections and allergies. Frequent use of antibiotics also reduces their effectiveness. In 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued new guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of ear infections. Dr. Richard Rosenfeld, one of the authors of the new guidelines, says 70% of ear infections resolve on their own within 2-3 days and 80% of infections get better on their own within ten days.                                                The recommendation is giving kids time to heal. The new guidelines encourage doctors (and parents) to use the “wait and see” approach. Even infections with a bulging ear drum and fever may be able to resolve on their own.

I feel like we have been conditioned to fear the body’s defenses.  There is a reason that your kid has an ear infection… 

In the meantime, let’s talk solutions.

 Onion: This is my favorite remedy for ear infections. The warmth of the onion soothes the pain almost immediately and the vapors from the onion help to fight the infection.

Slice a few 2 inch rings from the onion, place on a baking sheet. Heat the onion in the oven for about 15 minutes at 300 degrees until it is warm and slightly steaming. Wrap the onion in a towel and cup it over the infected ear. Repeat as often as necessary to soothe pain.

Garlic/Mullein Ear Drops:  Garlic ear drops are an age old treatment for ear infections. You can find these drops at any health food store. The herbs may help to fight the infection and if you heat the oil it will also soothe the pain. These should not be used if the ear drum has ruptured or if your child has ear tubes.

You can even make your own.

To prepare garlic mullein oil, place one whole bulb of finely chopped fresh garlic and 1 oz. of mullein flowers in a pint-sized jar. Add olive oil until the jar is full. Stir with a chopstick or the handle of a wooden spoon to release air bubbles. Cover the jar and place in the sunlight for 3 weeks (2 weeks in warm weather). Strain into a clean jar (discard plant material) and store in the refrigerator. This will keep for up to two years.

To use place 3-7 drops of the oil into the affected ear while the child lays on his side with the affected ear upward. The oil should be at room temperature or slightly warm. To warm it, put the drops in a spoon or a glass eyedropper and briefly hold a lit match close to it. Test the oil against the underside of your wrist to make sure it is not too hot. Have the child rest with the affected ear up for 5-10 minutes, keeping a warm hot water bottle on the ear. After this time let the child roll over and rest on the hot water bottle for as long as this brings comfort. Repeat on the other ear if necessary. This treatment can be repeated 2-3 times a day but may only be necessary once or twice.
