What To Give Your Family When They Are Sick

(This post may contain affiliate links)

It's hard when your kids are sick. It seems to always come in the middle of the night or on the weekends when you can't get to the doctor. It can be scary feeling like you are the one responsible for this little person, they are suffering and you don't know how to help them.

But there are ways you can help them! We will go over what you can keep on hand in your medicine cabinet to boost yours and your families immune system, things that will shorten the duration of the illnesses, and give the body a fighting chance so sickness doesn't turn into something more serious.

My name is Aleena, I am a certified Master Herbalist through the School of Natural Healing.

Your immune system consists of a complex collection of cells, processes, and chemicals that constantly defends your body against invading pathogens, including viruses, toxins, and bacteria.

Certain food can help to increase your bodies immune system:

Vitamin D
Vitamin C
Oregano oil
Colloidal Silver - 20 ppm

Vitamin D

Most everyone is deficient in vitamin D. In fact, low vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections,
including influenza and allergic asthma
Vitamin D is a great one to take daily for preventative and overall health. Be sure you are getting 2,000 IUs, if you feel like you are coming down with something double your daily dosage to wipe it out. For children use recommended dosages.

Vitamin C

Another great one to take daily for preventative and overall health. Vitamin C supports the function of various immune cells and enhances their ability to protect
against infection. It’s also necessary for cellular death, which helps keep your immune system healthy. By clearing out old cells and replacing them with new ones.
Additionally, high dose intravenous vitamin C treatment has been shown to significantly improve symptoms in people with severe infections, including covid-19.

Take the recommended dosage on your supplement. If you feel like you are getting sick, up your intake.

Awesome if taken when you being to feel sick it will help so the sickness won't last as long or be as intense. Zinc is needed for immune cell development and communication and plays an important role in inflammatory response.
Numerous studies reveal that  zinc supplements may protect against respiratory tract infections like the common cold. Supplementing with zinc may be beneficial for those who are already sick.

Oregano is a popular herb in the mint family that’s known for its impressive medicinal qualities. Its plant compounds offer antiviral properties.

In a test-tube study, both oregano oil and isolated carvacrol reduced the activity of murine norovirus (MNV) within 15 minutes of exposure. MNV is highly contagious and the primary cause of stomach flu in humans.

Oregano oil, diluted with a carrier oil, if placed topically on the sinus' and behind the ears and down the throat will help dry up and clear congestion, sinus infections, ear infections, or sore throats.

Colloidal Silver

When in doubt, use silver. It does it all, it boosts the immune system, is anti-bacterial, anti-funal, anti-viral, etc.

Not all silver supplements are created equal so be sure whatever brand you are purchasing is 20 parts per million (ppm). Silver is a metal so if the supplement has anything over 30ppm the body has a hard time processing and filtering the silver through. And less than 20ppm it is not strong enough to be a benefit.

Colloidal Silver is very safe to use on children. I use it for everything, anytime they are getting sick with anything I will give them a teaspoon of silver. Goopy eyes? I dropper silver in them. In a gel form colloidal silver is great to use topically on any scrapes, cuts, or infections.

Most everything is centered in the gut. If your gut bacteria is out of balance there are always issues. Taking a probiotic daily will help with digestion, your immune system, proper body functions, and your overall health.  Probiotics helps fight colds, flu, and infections. They also help reduce allergies, asthma, and inflammation.

Probiotics are especially helpful when pregnant and taking a good one throughout your pregnancy can help lower the possibility of testing positive for group B strep.

Garlic  has powerful anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It has been shown to enhance immune health by stimulating protective white blood cells like NK cells and macrophages. Anytime my kids have a cough I make a garlic paste with a few cloves of garlic and 1/4 cup of coconut oil. Blended in a food processor. Stored in a mason jar and applied to their chest multiple times a day.

Ginger products, such as elixirs, teas, and lozenges, are popular natural remedies for good reason. Ginger has been shown to have impressive antiviral activity thanks to its high concentration of potent plant compounds.

Test-tube research demonstrates that ginger extract has antiviral effects against influenza, RSV, and the stomach flu.
Additionally, specific compounds in ginger have been found to inhibit viral replication and prevent viruses from entering cells.

The beauty of herbs and oils is that they are all essentially food. Your body will absorb from it what it needs and eliminate the rest. These are all gentle on your system and really do provide such wonderful benefits.

If you have any concerns discuss them with a certified herbalist.
